Kennedy Town is at the western end of Sai Wan on the Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. It is named after Arthur Edward Kennedy, who was the 7th Governor of Hong Kong from 1872 to 1877. The neighborhood is primarily Chinese, but a growing number of expats are moving into a number of luxury buildings built along the waterfront.

Kennedy Town or 堅尼地城 in Traditional Chinese is located at the very Western End (Sai Wan) of Hong Kong Island overlooking Victoria Harbour.

g History

Kennedy Town is named after Arthur Edward Kennedy, who was the 7th Governor of Hong Kong from 1872 - 1877.

Kennedy Town was part of the larger settlement of Victoria City - named after Queen Victoria in 1843. Victoria City was brodened in scope in 1857, and 4 key areas were created:

  • Sai Wan (Western Ring)
  • Sheun Wan (Upper Ring)
  • Chung Wan (Central Ring)
  • Ha Wan (Lower Ring)

In Modern Chinese, Chung Wan is often stated as "Central" and Ha Wan as "Wan Chai".

Being at the very end of the Island, Kennedy Town hosts Western Terminuses for both Tram and Bus Routes.

Those in the know... will know there are two types of minibus services:
 

Red Roof - These follow relativley undocumented routes, Check the front and flag them down if they are heading where you need.

Green Roof - These are the documented and numbered routes, these typically have fixed pick up points, however they may be flagged down when there is space on board.

Kennedy Town has limited large communal areas - a temporary park is located at the Western End of New Praya.

A public swimming pool is located at Smithfield and can be contacted on 2817-7973, entry is HK$19 per Adult.
